Drive Yourself
Volare from San José - follow signs through or around San José pointing towards TRES RIOS and CARTAGO to reach the far eastern side of the city (unfortunately there are no good ways to avoid San José). Enter the toll road heading east/south (the Pan American Highway) headed towards CARTAGO. You will climb a long hill, then descend the other side. Keep to the left on the descent. At the base of the hill there's a crazy intersection that goes "straight" - the main road curves right. From toll booth to the intersection is about 6-10 minutes, about 4 miles.
At this intersection take the left (well, really it is take the "straight") and enter a narrow street. (This requires crossing the oncoming 2-lane highway traffic -- it looks terrifying, and it is, but it works). Continue on the narrow street about 100 yards, pass the stoplight, and then turn LEFT at the "Y". WHEW! You are now on the right road for Volare. This "transition" takes about 3 minutes.
Continue straight on this road and the traffic quickly turns from growling city to rural. You will ascend about 10 minutes, with a view of Cartago on your right below. The road takes a big turn to the right (and a GAS STATION) on the right side in the curve) and then the main road takes a big turn to the left -- but right in front of you is a statue of Jesus, and a smaller road to the right side of the statue. Take this road right (well, actually "straight"). From the intersection off the Pan American to the statue is about 10 minutes.
From the statue (you went on the right side, remember) to the next real town (Pacayas) is about 18-25 minutes. Pass thru Pacayas on the main road and continue to Capillades (with 5 speed bumps), Santa Teresa, Pastora (where there's a turn to go up to Turrialba volcano -- see map). Keep going straight (starting downhill again) -- you'll see Turrialba valley on the right below you. Pass thru Santa Cruz and El Carmen, and then watch out for San Rafael. The entry for Volare is a gated entry for a warehouse, on the right. From the statue it takes about 35 minutes.
